About this Course

This course DA 100 will discuss the various methods and best practices that are in line with business and technical requirements for modelling, visualizing, and analyzing data with Power BI. The course will provide hands on practice to back up the theory and best practice recommendations.

Prerequisites

While it is not necessary to have any Power BI experience, if you truly want to get the most out of the best practice methodologies covered in this course you should have the knowledge equivalent to the skills covered in our Power BI Essential Skills course.

At Course Completion

In this course, you will develop a full Power BI solution; turning raw data into reports, building a dashboard to manage alerts and packaging it all into one easy to access app for anyone in your company to use.

Day 1 will be all about how to access and process data from a range of data sources including both relational (such as Azure SQL database) and non-relational data (such as Excel, CSV). We will explore best practice considerations for data modelling, common mistakes to avoid when creating relationships in Power BI desktop, and time saving tips for profiling and transforming your data in Power Query Editor, using the M query language.

Day 2 will focus on data analytics and security. We will continue working with the same data from day 1, using DAX to analyse and filter the data in order to gain additional insights and implement proper security standards and policies across the Power BI spectrum including datasets and groups. You will perform both simple and complex DAX calculations. There’s a little bit of something in here for every skill level, whether you’ve never heard of DAX before or have been using it for a while, you’ll learn something new about how to unleash its full potential.

Day 3 brings it all together, focusing on the Power BI Service (PowerBI.com). We will manage and deploy reports and dashboards for sharing and content distribution. See how easy it can be to get insights from your data, and learn some new and clever ways to make your reports easy to use. Time and interest allowing, your instructor may show you how to build paginated reports and discuss licensing requirements necessary to publish them to a workspace for inclusion within Power BI.

Module 1: Get Started with Microsoft Data Analytics

This module explores the different roles in the data space, outlines the important roles and responsibilities of a Data Analysts, and then explores the landscape of the Power BI portfolio.

Module 2: Prepare Data in Power BI

This module explores identifying and retrieving data from various data sources. You will also learn the options for connectivity and data storage, and understand the difference and performance implications of connecting directly to data vs. importing it.

Module 3: Clean, Transform, and Load Data in Power BI

This module teaches you the process of profiling and understanding the condition of the data. They will learn how to identify anomalies, look at the size and shape of their data, and perform the proper data cleaning and transforming steps to prepare the data for loading into the model.

Module 4: Design a Data Model in Power BI

This module teaches the fundamental concepts of designing and developing a data model for proper performance and scalability. This module will also help you understand and tackle many of the common data modeling issues, including relationships, security, and performance.

Module 6: Create Measures using DAX in Power BI

This module introduces you to the world of DAX and its true power for enhancing a model. You will learn about aggregations and the concepts of measures, calculated columns and tables. You will learn the importance of a Date dimension table and use Time Intelligence functions to solve calculation and data analysis problems.
